        2021 HPP Investor Matchmaking Meeting held in Beijing

        The 2021 HPP Investor Matching Meeting, organized by the Haidian Pioneer Park (HPP), a high-tech business incubator, wrapped up in Beijing on Thursday.

        The meeting, which aims to connect investors and high-quality projects, attracted over 100 startup teams working in the fields of artificial intelligence, new-generation information technology, and health and medicine.

        Around 40 teams made their way into the final round to 10-minute-long, one-on-one meetings with investors to introduce their teams, technologies, operations, and future plans.

        Zhao Xinliang, director of the HPP, said the park is dedicated to aligning enterprises with investors through roadshows, project promotions, and investor matchmaking events to meet the financing needs of the businesses in the park.

        So far, the HPP has helped companies to acquire equity funds worth over 15 billion yuan (US$2.33 billion) and recommended nearly 300 companies to be listed on Beijing's fourth board market, Zhao said.

        The annual matchmaking event was launched in 2017 and has helped over 280 businesses to connect with over 150 institutional investors.

        Opening Ceremony of Overseas University Alumni Center was held

        On July 18th, the Opening Ceremony of Overseas University Alumni Center was held in Overseas Talent Harbor of Zhongguancun Science City. The Center aims to build a new platform for gathering resources from all sectors and explore a new mechanism for serving returnees pragmatically and efficiently. Meanwhile, it also focuses on strengthening exchanges and cooperation among the alumni of overseas returnees and building a home for overseas returnees by connecting and serving alumni effectively.

        Overseas University Alumni Center was established by Haidian Pioneer Park, Haidian District Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, Overseas Returnee Center, and 16 overseas alumni associations of colleges and universities including Oxford University, Cambridge University, London School of Economics and Political Science, University College London, University of Warwick, Johns Hopkins University, Purdue University, the University of Southern California, New York University, Northwestern University, University of Washington, Georgia Tech University, University of California-San Diego, the Ohio State University, University of Minnesota, National University of Singapore, and Singapore Management University. The Center relies on the sophisticated service system and benign innovation micro-ecology of Haidian Pioneer Park, Haidian District Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese and Overseas Returnee Center, and accumulated experience and knowledge of serving overseas returnees. It will provide four types of services: entrepreneurship service, consulting, training, and co-working space for the vast number of overseas returnees. By co-organizing six types of events such as alumni reunion, policy interpretation, themed training, themed sharing, industrial salons, and famous enterprises visit, we help alumni tackle practical problems regarding entrepreneurship, employment, teaching, and scientific research.

        Mrs.Shi Yue, Vice Chairman of Beijing Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese and Chairman of Haidian District Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, delivered a speech on behalf of the initiators. Mr. Zhao Xinliang, Director of Haidian Pioneer Park, introduced the Center's purpose, services, events, and work plan. Mrs.Zhang Jincao, President of UCL Alumni, delivered a speech on behalf of the Chairmans of the Alumni and read the Initiation Letter of Overseas University Alumni Center.

        Afterward, all parties had a dialogue on" How to better serve the alumni in the new era" and discussed new ideas and new types of service based on the development of overseas alumni.

        As an important event of the International Entrepreneurship Season of Zhongguancun Science City, the establishment of the Overseas University Alumni Center is a new carrier for serving overseas alumni and a pioneering measure to gather overseas talents and promote its internationalization. In March 2021, Cai Qi, Wang Zhigang, Chen Jining, and other municipal leaders visited HPP for investigation and spoke highly of business incubation, service empowerment, and internationalization of Haidian Pioneer Park.

        Since 2018, Haidian Pioneer Park has taken the initiative to promote internationalization with various measures. By establishing a full-time service team, setting up overseas representative offices, formulating Policies on Supporting Construction of International Talent Community and organizing online and offline roadshows of international projects as well as cross-border investigation and match-making; by holding parallel forum "Global Academician Science and Technology Innovation and Cooperation" and overseas academician exchange meeting during the Zhongguancun Forum in 2019; by initiating the establishment of the International Incubation Collaborative Center; and by strengthening cooperation with high-quality incubation institutions in Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, and other countries and enhancing communication and exchanges with embassies and consulates, HPP has been cultivating fertile ground for international innovation and entrepreneurship in a multi-dimensional way. Three international talent service carriers--HPP Hatchery, Overseas Talent Harbor of Zhongguancun Science City, and Zhongguancun Science City International Talent Exchange Center have been established, providing gathering places for international high-caliber talents in innovation and entrepreneurship. Forty-five international entrepreneurial teams from 21 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Korea, started their business. HPP has incubated Evoke, the first high-performance new energy motorcycle producer, and DART Imaging Technology, the first domestic digitalized breast cancer X-ray machine.

        Overseas University Alumni Center will soon bring in more alumni to boost its influence, improve its service capability, enhance its connectivity, integrate resources from universities and research institutes, and provide more professional and practical services for overseas returnees.

        Project Exchange on Spanish Culture, Renewable Energy and Wind Power was Held Successfully

        On July 17th, 2021, to promote cultural, scientific and technological exchanges between China and Spain, the Haidian Pioneer Park( HPP), along with the Belt and Road Capacity Cooperation Center Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association (CREIA), and Brich Technology Co., LTD, held a Country-Specific Salon for Brich International Entrepreneurs Club-- Project Exchange on Spanish Culture, Renewable Energy and Wind Power.

        This salon focused on the current situation and development of the new energy industry in China and Spain and carried out an online roadshow of a Spanish wind power technology project. The event organizer invited over 40 representatives of "going out" enterprises, investors, representatives of wind power enterprises in Spain, new energy technology entrepreneurs in Zhongguancun, and club members who are interested in new energy in Spain and have the intention to invest in Spain.

        This event aims to realize the exchange and complementarity of high-quality resources between Chinese and Spanish enterprises, build a professional information platform for enterprises to have a deep understanding of science and technology in the field of wind power as well as Spanish culture, and assist member enterprises to carry out specific cooperation such as project implementation and business match-making.

        During the event, the Chief Representative of China affairs of Madrid Investment Attraction and other professionals of related industries brought policy interpretation and the latest industry trends to audiences, providing professional and effective suggestions for enterprises to go to Spain.

        Peter Andreas Møller, Global Chief CMO of Kintech Engineering, a Spanish high-tech wind power company, presented the world's leading wind measurement technology. Mr. Møller introduced the background of the company and expressed a strong willingness to cooperate with Chinese enterprises to explore the overseas third-party market.

        Mr. Didier Bernheim of Academie des Beaux-Arts visited Oversea Talent Harbor of ZGC Science City

        Mr. Didier Bernheim, plenipotentiary of Chinese Affairs of Academie des Beaux-Arts, visited Oversea Talent Harbor of ZGC Science City along with Mrs. Chen Yan, International Development Consultant of National Art Museum of China, member commit of Jean Cardot foundation on July 14th, and the Director of Haidian Pioneer Park, Mr Zhao Xinliang hosted the guests.

        Director Zhao Xinliang warmly welcomed the guests and introduced the history, services, incubation outcomes, and development plan of Haidian Pioneer Park. As the first batch of national-level science and technology business incubators in China, the first Beijing Pioneer Park for Overseas Students and the National Pioneer Park for Overseas Students, Haidian Pioneer Park is characterized by "supporting overseas students and international talents to start businesses, cultivating advanced and sophisticated enterprises". It has formed a complete incubation system. It has become a pioneer park for overseas students with the largest number of overseas students, the highest level of education, and cultivated the largest number of listed enterprises in China. In order to support international talent entrepreneurship and create an "oversea-ish " environment, Haidian Pioneer Park has successively built three service carriers such as Talent Harbor of ZGC Science City since 2018 and has attracted 45 international projects from 21 countries.

        Mr. Didier Bernheim appreciated the warm welcome of Director Zhao and introduced the history of Academie des Beaux-Arts well as Jacques Rougerie Foundation, their cooperation with China and visions for future cooperation. Placed under the honorary presidency of H.S.H.Prince Albert II of Monaco, Jacques Rougerie Foundation was created in 2009 under the umbrella of the Institut de France. The Foundation encourages boldness and innovation in architectural undertakings as well as artistic creation related to Sea and Space in order to bring out the next Leonardo da Vinci, Jules Verne… of the 21st Century. It relies on its International Architecture and Art Competitions to raise entrepreneurship, to arouse awareness and foster action of everyone towards a new relationship between humans and their natural environment. The yearly International Architecture Competition sponsored by the foundation supports and accompanies the development of visionary biomimetic architectural projects located in the Sea, in Space or addressing the challenges of the Sea Level Rise, aiming at bond architecture and arts closely with science and technology. Mr. Didier hopes use this visit as an opportunity to explore a pattern of partnership that is innovative and diversified between HPP and Academie des Beaux-Arts as well as Jacques Rougerie Foundation.

        During the visit, the two sides discussed the nature of complementary between science and technology and art as well as the development trend of interconnection. Director Zhao addressed that measures taken by Haidian district including taping the new driving potential for the integrated development of culture and science and technology, building a new urban mode, promoting high-quality development, and building a high-quality city are the full embodiment that science and technology and art shine more brilliantly in the other's company. Both parties look forward to actively exploring cooperation models and jointly promoting in-depth exchanges in culture, science and technology between China and France.

        The International Entrepreneurship Season of Zhongguancun Science City is in Full Swing

        At the beginning of June, the International Entrepreneurship Season of Zhongguancun Science City was set in motion, gaining wide acknowledgment from the public and attention from dozens of mainstream media. A special report from Xinhua News Agency has accumulated over 560,000 views. A series of activities are in full swing, including the "Canada Night" reunion, policy publicity for overseas talents who are coming back home to pursue their career, and a UCL alumni salon.

        "Canada Night" Reunion

        As a fixed event in the entrepreneurial season, "Overseas Students Reunion" will be held once a month, themed by different countries and regions. "Canada Night" attracted more than 40 alumni from the Canada branch of Western Returned Scholars Association, Alumni Association of Montreal, McGill University, Smith Business School of Queen's University, University of Ottawa, and many other leading Canadian universities.

        Special Canadian ice wine and meals were served during the event. Participating alumni shared their experience and penetrating views about potential opportunities under a relaxed and pleasant circumstance.

        Policy Publicity for Overseas Talents

        To address concerns including employment, entrepreneurship, and household registration, the HPP, along with London PhD Network, hosted a themed online salon for over 500 doctors in England.

        UCL RGN Salon

        HPP, along with UCL Recent Graduate Network held a salon,themed “Now and Future about PMO for Game Publication”. Over 30 alumni from ByteDance, NetEase, Xiao Mi, and so forth joined the event.

        In the next few months, during the International Entrepreneurship Season of Zhongguancun Science City, a series of multi-cultural activities, such as student union reunion events with different themes, alumni salon, TRIZ public welfare training, roadshows, industry salons, innovation forums, etc. will be launched in varies forms, to attract and gather more overseas returnees and international talents.

        This is aiming at forging a platform for global innovative entrepreneurs to learn from each other, cooperate with each other, enabling more international talents to better understand Haidian, Beijing, and then taking root in Zhongguancun science city and assimilating into the Haidian innovation rainforest ecosystem. With all efforts, HPP hopes to set a good example in the construction of Beijing International Science and Technology Innovation Center that "brings together intellects all over the world and give full play to their strength".

        Opening Ceremony of International Entrepreneurship Season of Zhongguancun Science City was held successfully

        On June 5th and 6th, the opening ceremony "Zhongguancun Science City International Entrepreneurship Season and International Entrepreneurship Camp" kicked off in Zhongguancun Entrepreneurship Building,setting the whole Zhongguancun Science City International Entrepreneurship Season in motion.

        The International Entrepreneurship Camp focuses on the new generation of information technology, artificial intelligence, medicine and health and other state-of-the-art industries. 46 out-standing members were selected among 120 candidates to join the 2 day International Entrepreneurship Camp which includes training, roadshow, incubator tour and net-working. The average age of the campers is 33 years old. They are mainly Chinese oversea students graduated from Cambridge University, New York University, University of Maryland and other prestigious universities and two entrepreneurs from South Korea. 94% of the campers have a master's degree or above.

        A 60 seconds pitch competition drew close attention from over 50 investment institutes, and winners were awarded with a 140,000 yuan entrepreneurial gift package including free working space, free business registration, voucher for service and cash prize. Projects such as 5GC-V2X automotive intelligent network, high-end laser sensor, hydrogen fuel cell drew attention.

        The “International Entrepreneurship Season of Zhongguancun Science City” will last from June to September, with various events including Elevator World Tour™ Pitch Competition and Tent Village, aiming at attract more international talents and forge a platform for global innovators to deepen exchange and mutual learning.

        The Salon for exhibiting and sharing of French Culture and Science& Technology Projects was held successfully

        On May 15, 2021, The Haidian Pioneer Park( HPP), along with the Belt and Road Capacity Cooperation Center and Brich Technology Co., LTD. held a Country-Based Salon for Brich International Entrepreneurs Club to promote French Culture and Science& Technology Projects exchanging. This event was also strongly supported by Zhongguancun International Talent Exchange Center.

        This salon gathered experts and scholars who are interested in investment opportunities in France and French culture, representatives of French enterprises and top-tier business people in the cultural sector and member entrepreneurs of Brich. Guests invited to the event shared their professional information and experience in related industries.

        The Secretary General of the Belt and Road Capacity Cooperation Center analyzed the current progress of the BRI and shared its latest preferential policies. The representative from HPP, Mr. Zhong, introduced HPP’s one-stop service for foreigners to start businesses in China. A human resources expert from France shared techniques in talent evaluation and recruitment in France. A French specialist from Beijing Foreign Studies University introduced French culture and French business etiquette taboos.

        In addition, a roadshow session was included in the salon, during which European entrepreneurs presented their projects. A France biological medicine expert was invited via video link to share his experience in small molecule drug modifiers. The company is currently developing two new drugs to treat COVID-19 and rheumatism respectively, and current outcomes were presented by experts during the event.

        Dr. Fleur Chabaille-Wang Yuhua (Distinguished Expert of School of French Language and Culture, Beijing Foreign Studies University) shared an overview of French culture, allowing participants to have an in-depth understanding of French cultural taboos and social etiquette, to avoid a series of problems such as poor communication caused by cultural differences when enterprises "go out".

        Dr.Meng Xin (Permanent Secretary General of Capacity Cooperation Center, Founder of the Brich) introduced Brich's vision of taking the lead in connecting global enterprises and demonstrated the services it provides to help enterprises to go abroad.

        Aimed to Establish a World Preeminence Innovation Center, Leaders from National Departments and Beijing Municipality Made a Site Visit to Haidian Pioneer Park

        A meeting related to establishing a world-preeminence innovation center was held on March 20, leaders from National Departments and Beijing Municipality attended and they made a site visit to Haidian Pioneer Park (HPP) and other R&D institute and hi-tech enterprises. They did a survey on the progress of innovation center establishment, the operation of hi-tech incubator, R&D dynamics, etc. In HPP, 2700 startups were incubated and 31 of which have landed on stock market and owned the key technology. The leaders exchanged with the foreigners incubated in HPP and encouraged the incubator servers in incubating innovative and promising enterprises by optimizing the entrepreneurial ecosystem with technology methods.

        Zhongguancun is a pilot of reform and innovation, where international exchange should be enhanced to join the global innovation network. The Overseas Talent Harbor of Zhongguancun Science City was launched in 2020, and had incubated 37 foreign startups totally, most of which are technology-intensive companies. HPP always adheres to the principle that establish a paradise for entrepreneurs, it provides preferential policies and active environment for foreign teams in order to make them feel like home and have no barrier in their pursuing their dreams in China.

        Leaders from Beijing Municipal Bureau of Talent, Beijing Overseas Talents Center visited HPP

        In the afternoon on Jan.6, leaders from Beijing Municipal Bureau of Talent, Beijing Overseas Talents Center, Zhongguancun Pioneer Park Association of Overseas Talents, accompanied by Haidian Pioneer Park (HPP) and Innoway, visited Overseas Talents Harbor of Zhongguancun Science City.

        Two startups of the Talents Harbor, Evoke and Popular Robotics, shown them the business development recently, as well as their products and awards. All expressed their appreciation on the great progress they had gained and also shown warm concern on their development problems related on talents introduction and entrepreneurship support, Mr. Baiyu, the Supervisor of Enterprise Service Department of HPP, also introduced recent support policies of HPP, which would make their entrepreneurship smooth and fruitful.

        After that, they had a meeting in the Inno Cafe, exchanged their ideas about talents and the support policies thereof.

        Oct 9th, Nick Torres presented a unique course for entrepreneurs regarding the topic "Internet Content Provider". More than 140 audiences attended the online session. Nick formed a fictitious start-up company to illustrate what is ICP filing and ICP license, followed by tips for foreign companies in China.         Sep 28th, the first “Haidian Pioneer Park Demo Day” was held in the Overseas Talent Harbor of Zhongguancun Science Park. This event is designed for international startups to present their project and product to investors and investment institutions. Six international tech teams participated in this activity, industries ranging from AI, robot and IT to new energy vehicle and medical health. One of the projects – Evoke – has already closed angel funds with RMB 5 million. More international events and exchanges will be witnessed in Overseas Talent Harbor.         May 18, Stephanie from HUACAI delivered another session for foreign professionals and entrepreneurs in the topic of “Interpretation of Individual Income Tax (IIT) and Annual Final Tax Settlement”. IIT reform came into force at the beginning of 2019 and all residence taxpayers are required to complete the annual final tax settlement, including foreigners who have resided in China for 183 days or more.

        May 21, Ran WEI, sales manager of the new retailing department at HUACAI presented a speech about “The Tax Incentive Policy for Software and Technology Enterprises”.         On April 20, Fiona HAO, VP at Pingxiao Tyche technology, prepared a presentation for international entrepreneurs on the topic of “How to communicate with investors effectively”. As an investor who has worked both in China and European countries, she provided practical suggestions about pitch and business plan (BP) through the course. Pitch and BP are crucial for entrepreneurs when they are trying to look for co-founders and the first touch-point with investors. Ms. HAO introduced 10 aspects that investors are expecting from a business plan.

        On April 15, HPP has invited Philip Beck - 貝曦賢, Chairman at Dubeta Pty Ltd Ventures, to share his insights on “Building Personal Brand”. As someone who has 15 years experience in China, Mr. Beck pointed out several simple rules that entrepreneurs should obey when trying to build their personal brand and that of their start-up. “The number of business decisions that you are going to make in one year here in China is equal to the number of decisions you would have made in seven years in Australia.” Thus, moving fast and being simple & pragmatic are crucial to developing your business. Mr. Beck also took some start-ups as examples to show the audiences how they should use different channels properly for branding.
